The Pirates lead Boston 2-0 after one inning. Pedro Alvarez rocked a two-out, two-run home run to right field to also plate Starling Marte, who had a leadoff single.
Pittsburgh's Francisco Liriano, who worked a scoreless opening frame, is back out for his second inning of work.
