A.J. Burnett's first season in Pittsburgh has taken a serious hit.
The team announced Thursday afternoon that Burnett, 35, will undergo surgery to fix an orbital fracture of his right eye. Burnett suffered the injury after he fouled a ball off of his face during Wednesday's workout.
The Pirates aquired Burnett in a trade with the New York Yankees, hoping to add experience and durability to a young staff. But that's up in the air now, and the Pirates are not announcing a timetable for Burnett's return until after tomorrow's surgery.
