Observations through five innings of intrasquad intrigue

- Team Black leads Team Gold 1-0 after five innings here at McKechnie Field. Michael McKenry singled home Matt Hague during the bottom of the third.

- Despite the team names, both squads are wearing gold jerseys. Their pants tell them apart - Team Gold is in grey, Team Black is wearing white.

- A pair of former Marauders met up in the third inning when Team Black's Jeff Locke pitched against the Gold's Eric Fryer. Fryer worked a walk, but Locke was able to exact revenge when Fryer was caught stealing 1-3-6. Sources say Marty the Marauder was so overcome with emotion, he couldn't speak. Fryer and Locke became the first two Marauders to make the Pirates' roster last summer.

- Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones, playing for Team Gold, teamed for a nifty double play in the third. Alavarez, a third baseman, fielded a ball to his right, tagged Jeff Clement, who was leading off third, and then threw across the diamond to Jones, who gloved the throw by doing a split that earned 10s across the board. Even the tough East German judge approved.

- Gerrit Cole, the Pirates' first-round draft pick out of UCLA, made his professional debut with Team. Cole walked two and allowed a double to Matt Hague during the fifth inning.
